Building Resilience - 1 Day
Training Program
for Health Professionals, Carers, and Children
About This Program
Introduction
This
workshop is a small part of the program that is available for school
communities as part of our larger "Get a Life!" program which was run
as our clinical trial at Clarkson High School, halving bullying in the
first week, and producing outcomes of 72% improvement in behavioural
and academic performance scores in the workshop group, and 42%
improvement in a "control" group within the school community.
You can read about the complete program HERE.
The
purpose of this 1-day workshop is to give the participants
evidence-based interventions and helping techniques which may be used
with populations of at-risk children, along with an understanding of
appropriate use.
By
the end of the workshop, participants will have gained knowledge and
experience of 3 quite different techniques and should be able to apply
these with significant effect in most cases.
It
is envisaged that a professional forum will be established to provide
ongoing support to the participants so that they may continue to
develop their skills and effectiveness.
Opening
The
workshop opens with a presentation and discussion of the clinical trial
at Clarkson High School which achieved such significant positive
effects on behavioural and academic performance in the trial group and
also in their peers. It is important to note that the trial
utilised a range of interventions, but that the 3 chosen for inclusion
in this workshop are recognised as being particularly
effective.
We
also explain that progress
is not as dependent upon technique as it is upon the context in which
the technique is applied, encompassing knowledge of the psychological
development and state of the client, safety, duty of care, case
management protocols, and the quality of the
“therapeutic” relationship itself.
Applied
in an appropriate context, these types of techniques (collectively
known as BMSA – brief multi-sensory activation, for their
neuro-physiological theoretical basis) produce outcomes which have not
previously been experienced.
Technique 1 – NeuroStim
This
is a neuro-somatic technique designed to extinguish unhelpful
conditioned responses such as fear, anger, grief, etc.
Techniques such as this do not and cannot extinguish
unconditioned responses such as, for example threat responses
due to imminent real danger.
A
brief exposition of the neuro-anatomy involved in this intervention
will be given, and the emphasis, as with the other techniques, is
always on practical application.
This
technique was developed in Australia by Christine Sutherland and has
not yet been widely disseminated. The international community
has only recently been informed.
Technique 2 – Resource Triangle
Although
this technique is known as an NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming)
technique, in fact it can also be regarded as a neuro-somatic technique
because of its use of simultaneous multi-sensory overlay of a problem
state, which in most cases collapses or extinguishes the problem state,
allowing the person easier and more comprehensive access to internal
resources, along with an ability to think more rationally and make
better decisions, now that the thinking process is less affected by
unhelpful emotional reactivity.
This
technique was developed by renowned NLP trainer Rex Sikes, in the USA
and has been the centrepiece of a clinical trial on depression.
Technique 3 – GaugeWork
This
technique utilises metaphor in an unusual but highly interesting way to
moderate internal states. It has been tested in trial with a
group suffering from clinical depression, with patients suffering from
anxiety disorders (including panic attacks), and also with patients
exhibiting strong aggression.
Developed
in Australia by Astra Johnston, GaugeWork was greeted enthusiastically
by the international community and is now utilised all around the
world.
Follow-Up/Continued Development
A
professional forum has been established for adult graduates of this
program, to both refine and extend the skills taught, and to provide
on-going mentoring and peer mentoring on a day-by-day basis.
This forum is available to any professional working with children, but
is free to graduates of this program.
