NLP - The Good and the Bad
NLP
- The Good and the Bad!
It's unfortunate but understandable that NLP does not enjoy
a solid level of respect in Australia. Unfortunate,
because NLP
truly provides a rich array of tools and techniques for more effective
communication, increased personal and professional performance,
including far more effective strategies across a whole range of
business activities.
And it's
understandable, because
NLP has become
littered with gurus and scam artists and the plain deluded, offering
overnight miracle solutions, and polluting training with new-age hocus
pocus, totally unproven by scientific research.
It's no wonder that business especially is so skeptical of its benefits
and that many psychologists mock and deride it.
Although we are the first NLP
research and training
organisation in Western Australia, we no longer publicly
advertise or involve ourselves in open public programs because we wish
to distance ourselves from NLP as it is presented commercially, and to
champion far higher-quality training and application of its principles
and processes.
We recognise that NLP alone
does not
provide expertise to achieve success, and all of our programs
are strongly based on skills and knowledge in fields as diverse as
family therapy, QA and TQM, marketing and financial management.
It is
only when skillfully applied to an area of expertise that NLP gives
advantage to the professional.
NLP
can also be useful in
self development, and for enhancing communication in all relationships.
However used manipulatively, or without personal insight, it
can
devastate relationships rather than improve them.
Likewise, where the participant is not psychologically or
emotionally-equipped to study and work with unconscious processing, NLP can even be
dangerous to the individual, especially where the person is without
proper professional support.
However a quality NLP training program certainly does provide enormous
advantage to the professional, whether in the clinical, corporate,
performance or sporting arenas. On our medical and self-help
sites, we do not promote any clinician who has not undertaken at least
practitioner certification training with a reputable trainer, so
crucial are NLP skills to the success of any treatment program.
