The Pain Train:
How to Get Off
1-Day Program
(Requires on-going support through the management period)
There are 2
particularly interesting facts about chronic pain:
1 When we examine brain maps of people who experience chronic pain, and
people who are experiencing emotional pain, there is very little, if
any, difference between these. On the other hand, acute pain
utilises different nerve paths and shows up differently in the brain.
2 There is little or no correlation between the severity of
injury/damage and reported pain levels. Several studies have
now been completed where X-rays of spinal columns in various stages of
damage or deterioration were examined in order to try to predict what
level of pain might be experienced by each person.
(Naturally, one might assume that the more damage, the more
pain.) No such correlation was found to exist, meaning that
some people with severe damage had no pain, and some people with no
damage had intense pain. So pain is not an indication of
damage in the case of chronic pain.
This program takes advantage of these 2 most interesting
characteristics of chronic pain.
Very
Important Warning
Because chronic pain may be produced by an array of serious illnesses,
please ensure that your supervising doctor has investigated and ruled
out other physical causes for your symptoms. Do not
self-diagnose -- first see your qualified medical practitioner to
ensure correct diagnosis.
In addition, while you are on this program, if you notice changes in
your pain it is essential to notify your doctor so that he/she is kept
informed of your progress.
Chronic pain almost always requires the care of a health team and
enrolment in any program should not be considered without the ongoing
care of your supervising physician. Although you will receive
invaluable help from this program, and most people obtain relief very
quickly, this program can in no way replace the care and supervision of
your doctor and other members of your health team, particularly those
who have the responsibility for your physical fitness program.
Without exception it is essential that people suffering from chronic
pain follow a physical therapy program. Without continuing to
build flexibility, strength, and stamina you would be sabotaging every
effort we could possibly make. Whilst we certainly appreciate
that a program must be put in place that minimises risk of flaring, at
the same time increasing intensity and duration of a number of
carefully-designed activities, this on-line program cannot and does not
attempt to address those issues for individuals except as a matter of
interest in your general progress.
This program does not purport to offer 24-hour assistance, and is not
in any way an emergency service. Rather it provides a way of
learning about an array of triggers and contributing factors to chronic
pain, identifying what may be at play in your own unique case, and
showing you simple, safe and easy methods to gain improvement quickly.
Who Runs the
Program?
To read about the background and experience of the program leaders,
please see www.bmsa-int.com/about_the_founders.htm. We are 3
clinicians from 3 countries, each leaders in our fields, who have come
together to design a program which is based on the best evidence
available from neurophysiology.
How Has the
Program Been Tested?
This program has been utilised successfully for the past 4
years. In Australia there have been 2 clinical trials, both
of which achieved outstanding results. A report on one of
these studies is available by clicking "Articles and Research" above.
What Does the
Program Involve?
Because it is the nervous system itself which generates chronic pain,
we work with you to determine what physical and psychological factors
may be causing your nervous system to over-react to stimuli.
The main focus of the program is teaching and helping you use simple
methods to prevent your nervous system from moving into inappropriate
responses, in a measured, systematic and orderly way so that you
experience lower pain measures over time, with reduced flaring, reduced
need for analgesic medication, and greater return to a full and active
life.
This is completely different to expecting you to use "willpower" to
simply "try to see things differently". We already know that
you are doing the best that you can, and that may not even be keeping
things under control, let alone working!
Instead we look at the unconscious responses that your nervous system
is "doing to you" to produce that pain and other symptoms. As
hard as it may be to believe, we now have easy ways of impacting on
those that don't usually involve medication. This program is
about showing you those methods.
Will I Have
to Keep Using the Methods for the Rest of My Life?
No. The aim of these methods is to make permanent adjustments
to the way your nervous system works. It's possible that you
could experience chronic pain again in the future, but far less likely.
How Fast Can
I Expect Results?
Whilst our clinical experience and research shows rapid change, often
immediately and usually within a few days, for some people changes are
slower. Approximately 50% of people notice a sudden dramatic
change, and for half of those this change is permanent. For
the majority of people steady work is required over several weeks or
months. Progress will seem to go up and down, but if you keep
statistical data on pain measures, you should definitely see an overall
drop, and hopefully elimination or significant reduction of the pain
you're experiencing at the moment.
As you will see from the clinical trial in Australia, 50% of the
participants were able to eliminate their pain completely within 3
days, 80% of patients were able to decrease their pain by more than
half, and only a very small proportion were unable to be helped during
the short time of the trial. So most commonly people do
notice some dramatic result very quickly. A very small
percentage of people are not helped.
The Steps You
Need to Take
The first thing you should do is purchase the very inexpensive
self-help manual "The
Pain Train - How to Get Off!: Beyond the TENS Machine"
which has been written specifically for people suffering from this
problem. You can then choose which way you prefer to
undertake the program.
Live Program
The live program runs for a single day, with participants learning the
many and varied causes of chronic pain, as well as the healthiest,
fastest, and most comfortable ways to overcome them. The
objective is not to learn to "cope" with the pain, but to use the most
modern neurophysiological techniques to quite literally, switch it off,
and switch it off permanently.
Whether you choose to do the live program followed by the on-line forum
(or individual therapist), or work through the program entirely
on-line, in either case you will be working through a set program which
aims to identify and resolve every trigger to your chronic pain, so
that as quickly and comfortably as possible you may move to a life that
is as full and satisfying as you choose.
How to Book
We do not advertise training programs, but instead take bookings for
private groups. You can book your group for this training program by
telephoning Lifeworks on 61 8 9246 1977 (Western Australia) or emailing
us on info@lifeworks-group.com.au. We are available to travel anywhere
in the world to deliver this training.
Fees
Fees are negotiated in each case dependent upon associated
costs. As an indication of the fee payable, for a group size
of 20, fees are $2500 per day plus venue, travel and accommodation
where necessary.
Doing
the Program Totally On-Line
You can readily
do the program totally on line, and this is covered in the purchase of
the "The Pain Train"
Program mentioned above. On
payment for the program, you receive an automatic welcome letter which
explains how to register and enrol.
Doing the Program Individually
Not everyone
finds group programs appropriate, and you are welcome to register for
individual therapy if you prefer. This can be delivered
anywhere in the world by email, skype, VoIP and web cam if you have
that facility. It can also be delivered locally in Perth face
to face or by telephone. The cost is $160 per hour, and
usually 3-6 sessions are required.
Please email us
on info@lifeworks-group.com.au
if you would like to make enquiries.
